Shorten string to maximum length

Description:This function shortens a string to a maximum length, and returns the shortened version of the string, if the string is longer than the length, then the function cuts the string at the last space character, and adds "..." so you dont end up with half a word at the end of the sentence (like you can with the left() function.

The function also checks that the string is not null which can cause the left() function to break.
Instructions:paste the function anywhere in your code and call it like this:

myString = "this is a long string which is too long"

myShortString = shortString(myString,25)

response.write(myShortString)

returns the value:

"this is a long string..."

using left(myString,25) would return the value:

"this is a long string whi"
