iOS5 is coming on 12th October 2011. There is also a new iPhone 4S arriving two days after that - but you won't have to wait until the 14th to get iOS5. the iPad and iPad2 can be upgraded to iOS5, along with third and fourth gen iPhones and iPods.

This is great news since iOS5 will allow the iPads to use rich text editors with support for the contenteditable attribute, and will allow iPhones and iPads to use overflowing div layers. That means that Content Management Systems will be able to run on iPads. I've just spent the last few weeks rebuilding the front end of my CMS system so that it operates well in a 1024 x 768 sized browser - which is the native screen res of the iPad.

The iPhone 4S is very similar to an iPhone 4 on the outside, but with the more powerful dual core A5 processor (the same one used in the iPad 2) which apple claims will run iOS5 much more smoothly. This implies that the iPad2 will comfortably run iOS5. How 3rd gen iphones and first gen iPads will cope with the heavier OS is yet to be seen.
