iOS5 on iPad
Just installed iOS5 on my iPad 2 - first impressions are that theres not much difference on the front end. The default safari browser has a slightly easier way of adding tabs, but nothing exceptional. There's iCloud backup options - which did not work when setting up the iPad for the first time, so I had to select 'back up to my computer' instead of 'backup to iCloud' - otherwise you can't skip this step. Theres a notification centre panel that appears when you swipe down from the top (my device just lists 'no new notifications' so not found a use for it yet) and theres a new button for iMessage which is a bit like msn for apple devices - nothing spectacular there really.
On the browser, theres some good features. The long awaited contenteditable property has been added, so you can now try and use rich text editors in a browser. I tried a few editors and some like CKEditor work beautifully on iOS5. Some like Pinedit partially work (very slow and the cursor appears in the wrong place). Some rich text editors like the otherwise excellent RadEditor do not work at all (at least in any of Telerik's demo pages). Hopefully RadEditor iOS5 compatibility will be fixed in the next version. The best browser enhancement is iframe and div overflow scrolling which now works great (no more esoteric two finger scrolling).
Other than these things, there are said to be 'more than 200 new features' - I've not really found more than 3 or 4 that would make the upgrade worth while for me. I don't use the camera on the ipad, I don't buy newspapers or books on it, I don't use email on the ipad (I'd rather use my android phone as that works better with gmail) and I don't use twitter. So the upgrade for me is basically for very small benefit were it not for the most compelling reason to upgrade: You don't need to install the hateful iTunes software on your computer anymore ! (assuming you can get iCloud backup working and you have a wireless network). I had to temporarily install itunes 10.5 to upgrade the ipad but now that I have, I will remove itunes again to free up space and memory on my computer.
