IE6, bane of the web developers life, is still surprisingly popular. In the UK it accounts for 3.5% of the market share. In China, the figure is 34.5%. Microsoft has launched a website to highlight awareness of it's new Internet Explorer 9 browser which shows the global market share for IE6. Called The Internet Explorer 6 Countdown, this website shows on a country by country basis the market share for IE6.

I think this is going too soft on the ie6 users. I think we should collectively add a simple bit of browser detection script to every large website in the world (such as facebook, google, ebay, amazon, baidu, etc) that redirects the user from the site over to another site (preferable independent) warning of the dangers of using IE6.
