Another site Banned for Aggressive SEO
Just had an email today from Bagga Menswear saying that they have been banned from facebook, or in their words: "Our account had been closed. Banned. Disabled. Chucked off. Barred !"
The rate at which they signed up followers, about 150 new friends per hour, seems to have caught the attention of the FB moderators who decided that they were violating the site rules. This is an example of overzelous SEO which other companies have fallen foul of. Moneysupermarket was penalised by google in 2007, gocompare in jan 2008 and again in april 2009 and even on of the UK's biggest SEO companies, Big Mouth Media, have been caught out for trying to manipulate the search engine rankings in the past (see: http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/003340.html)
The moral of the story? You should be very careful when trying to create back links and tweek sites for search engine friendliness. Don't think that by adding hundreds of back links, and optimising your site to the hilt will get you the top spot. Quite often, the best policy is to mix natural backlinks (where people link to your site because it contains something of value), manual link submissions, eg DMOZ, and stready but non spammy content building. Building the content of your website is just as important as building the reputation.
